Bloodstone is an opaque cryptocrystalline quartz that's part of the Chalcedony family. Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, is a dark green variety of chalcedony, often flecked with bright red spots of iron oxide, resembling drops of blood. The green color comes from tiny inclusions of chlorite and pyroxene, while the red comes from iron oxide minerals, usually hematite. The most common type of Bloodstone is from India, hence called "Indian Bloodstone." Bloodstone has been prized since ancient times for its striking appearance and symbolism.
